NEW SONG & VIDEO! "WEEKENDS IN JAIL" (THE INTELLIGENCE) COVERED BY ME! FEATURING MISS TEN, A HORSE, & BEATLES!

I don't often miss a day's posting here, but hopefully the content in today's post will make up for yesterday's lack! I'm really excited to bring you this DIY cover I did of the Intelligence's "Weekends In Jail" and a video featuring our own Miss Ten galloping around in a very chilly local park.

"Weekends In Jail" cover

Here's the backstory...

A few weeks ago I was sitting around, no doubt doing something of national importance, listening to my iTunes on shuffle. "Weekends In Jail" came up, which is on post-punk band the Intelligence's "Boredom and Terror" album from several years ago. It's one of my favorite Lars Finberg songs, from the dirty garage sound to the achingly-sad lyrics set against a a cool poppy riff. Here's the original, even lower than low-fi off the red vinyl:

So, after that finished playing, another one of my favorite songs came on, which has a similar tempo and is in the same key of D...

The Beatles, "Thank You Girl"

KA-PLOING! That was my brain going, HEY! HEY! I GOTS AN IDEAR! AW CRAP, NOW WHAT? said the other side of my brain. HEY! HEY! WHAT IF I COVER THE FIRST SONG AND ADD IN SOME ELEMENTS FROM THE SECOND, WOOO! said Brain One. OH HERE WE GO AGAIN, YOU CAN HARDLY PLAY! said Brain Two. AH SHURRUP, said Brain One, LET'S JUST SEE!

So I started to mess around with ideas, starting with trying to get a basic drum track down. I ended up actually bruising my hands playing, which is both sad and hilarious. I taped 'em and soldiered on.

It wasn't coming together as I heard it vaguely in my head until I plugged in the trusty ol' geetar into the little Fender G-Dec amp I like to use. I didn't want to copy the original sound, and needed something to fit the 'luded-out depressed Peggy Lee style voice I wanted for it. I twiddled knobs until I got a sound that made me go, "that's it!" -- a clean surf-y tremolo vibe. When I looked over at the screen display to see what preset I was mangling, it read "Bakersfield." As this is the hometown of song composer Finberg, I took this as a positive sign that I should at least finish the work I set out to do as best I could.

SO, challenge accepted, idea fleshed out, song finished!  It's good to DO the things you love to do! Here's what I ended up with, the Intelligence + Beatles + Me.

Marianne, "Weekends In Jail"

I decided that I wanted to put it up on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, etc. for SHEER PROFIT, as it cost me exactly NOTHING to make it. I hope you will find it worthy of NINETY-NINE AMERICAN PENNIES. Just to let you know that your coins are going to good use, I will tell you that the massive bags of cash will be split between: me, so that I may continue to buy coffee and thereby not drive into trees in a stupor; my daughter Miss Ten, for bravely going out into the cold wind and rain yesterday wearing a horsehead to shoot a video for the song, and to Lars Finberg, so that he may keep enjoying lentils, a superior and cost-efficient source of protein! Buy here on iTunes! Or buy here on Amazon for a DIME LESS! Wow!

Speaking of the video...

Thank you so much for listening and watching. We had a blast.
